JAMES TURRELL
Dawning
“Dawning” (1992) is the only work in the collection that is permanently on show at Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall. It was installed in 1994 during a solo exhibition of James Turrell’s work and is the artist’s only permanently installed work in Scandinavia. Turrell explores effects of light and space that speak to the viewer without words by impacting the body and the senses. His work is experiential while allowing us to actively perceive and relate to our sense of sight.
Turrell’s interest in light and its phenomena was awoken at an early age. His family were Quakers who have a great respect for light and its connection to God. The experience of light and space from his flights as a pilot as well as his studies in perceptual psychology as a complement to his fine arts degree at the Claremont Graduate School in California, USA, have been important for his work with light. Turrell has been working on his largest and most expansive artwork, Roden Crater in Arizona, since the 1970s. In an extinct volcano he is constructing the illusion of the sky and the convex shape of the earth, a place where the sun, moon and stars are harnessed as the light sources for the drama and only the relationship to the heavens is important.
Dawning cannot be viewed during Spring 2012. Welcome back during Fall 2012 to book a viewing.
