ARTIST TALKS

PODCAST: LECTURE WITH ANDREA ZITTEL

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 9, 2011

The artist talks about her work and how she uses her home and studio A–Z West in Joshua Tree, California to explore ideas about what humans need for survival.

Since the early 1990s, I have used the arena of my day to day life to develop and test prototypes for living structures and situations. By using myself as a guinea pig I often use my own experiences to try to construct an understanding of the world at large. The experiments have at times been extreme – such as wearing a uniform for months on end, exploring limitations of living space, living without measured time. However one of the most important goals of this work is to illuminate how we attribute significance to chosen structures or ways of life, and how arbitrary any choice of structure can be. I do not mean to deny the personal significance of these decisions, instead, I use my work in order to try to comprehend values such as “freedom,” “security,” “authorship,” and “expertise.” I am interested in how qualities, which we feel are totally concrete and rational, are often subjective, arbitrary or invented.

The lecture took place at Bio Rio, Hornstull, Stockholm, Sweden. Language: English.

PODCAST: ARTIST TALK WITH CHOREOGRAPHER BJÖRN SÄFSTEN

APRIL 14, 2011
A conversation between Chief Curator and Deputy Director Richard Julin and choreographer Björn Säfsten and dancers Anja Arnquist, Sophie Augot, Allison Ahl, Linda Blomqvist and Madeleine Lindh.

From April 14th to 18th, Björn Säfsten’s ”Corduroy de-constructed,” a conceptual performance in which the choreographer presents movements for observation, inspection and inspiration, was performed at Magasin 3. Richard Julin discusses the process of deconstructing and remounting the work “Corduroy” with Björn Säfsten and his dancers. They explore what happens when a work originally created for a large stage is broken down into three separate yet corresponding parts and moved from a traditional stage to the more intimate gallery space at Magasin 3.

”Corduroy de-constructed” is part of the Spring 2011 series “Performancexhibition” at Magasin 3.

You specify it, we fabricate it: The art of production

20 OCTOBER 2010

Wouter Davidts is professor of modern and contemporary art at VU University in Amsterdam and co-editor of the book “The Fall of the Studio. Artists at Work”. The starting point for his lecture is the conceptualist turn in studio production that was initiated by Tony Smith’s ”Die”, a sculpture of which he ordered the production by telling the instructions over the phone to the steel company. The lecture is followed by an artist talk with Maria Hedlund and Carl Hammoud who share their view on the studio and work process. Moderator: Curator Tessa Praun. Language: English. ARTIST TALK WITH TAL R

NOVEMBER 5 2009, IN THE MAGASIN 3 LOBBY

Chief Curator Richard Julin in conversation with the artist. The title of the exhibition refers to at least two things. Tal R sees the medium of painting per se as something “old and confused”. He says himself that his biggest asset is that he never took painting for granted. Every painting is a new reason to paint. The artist calls the medium “weak” and says: ”a painting is just a flat thing that art historically is regressive”. As he sees it the weak position of painting opens up further possibilities for the medium.
