ANTON HENNING

September 7 – December 9, 2012

Curator: Richard Julin

Magasin 3 is pleased to present an extensive exhibition featuring the German artist Anton Henning. The term Gesamtkunstwerk is often used to describe his work because it synthesizes painting, sculpture and video into a single spatial installation.

Anton Henning’s artwork has a mysterious quality that escapes categorization. By fluidly shifting between abstract expression and figurative elements, he creates highly original imagery. Still lifes, landscapes, interiors and portraits are all painted in a style that is simultaneously playful, grandiose, and ironic. Distinctive swirls, the so-called “Hennlings,” is a common thread that runs throughout his paintings. Henning’s influences come from modern painters, such as Francis Picabia, Pablo Picasso, and Martin Kippenberger, as well as current themes from popular culture.

The exhibition at Magasin 3 will focus primarily on Anton Henning’s painting, exploring its relationship to the spatial dimensions of sculpture.

Anton Henning was born in 1964 in Berlin. He lives and works in Berlin and Manker. He has been included in numerous exhibitions, for example at Kunstmuseum Krefeld & Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld (2011), Kunstpalais, Erlangen (2011), Haunch of Venison, London (2011), Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh (2011), DZ Bank Kunstsammlung, Frankfurt (2011), Loock, Berlin (2011), ARNDT, Berlin (2011), Magasin 3, Stockholm (2010), Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo (2010), Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden (2010), Zach Feuer Gallery, New York (2010), Kunsthalle Mannheim (2009), Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (2008), Arp Museum – Bahnhof Rolandseck, Remagen (2007), S.M.A.K.
