WE WHO WRITE

Richard Julin

Richard Julin is chief curator at Magasin 3. Over the past 10 years he has been responsible for a number of key exhibitions. RJ has presented exhibitions of the works of Mona Hatoum, Tino Sehgal and Tal R to name but a few. During the installation of Pipilotti Rist’s exhibition Magasin 3 was turned into a music and film studio for the production of ”Gravity, Be My Friend”. Some years before, Lara Schnitger made a vinyl record, and for two summers RJ arranged for the music club ”Trollet” to be based at Magasin 3 Projekt. Charles Long, Tony Oursler and DJ Spooky all made CDs as a part of their work for Magasin 3. Somehow music tends to be involved when it comes to RJ’s exhibitions. In 2009 he made the audience very happy when he invited Leah Singer and Lee Ranaldo, one of the founders of Sonic Youth, to play at the opening of the exhibition ”iloveyouihateyou”.

Sara Källström

Sara Källström is the curator for program and education at Magasin 3. Besides planning and arranging talks with artists such as Jonathan Monk and Tal R, SK organizes the evening program with themes ranging from creativity as resistance to the role of the voice in a specific artwork. SK is passionate about developing the pedagogical aspects of exhibitions and about reaching new audiences, something she also lectures about for the curator program at Stockholm University. In addition SK is in command of the lobby activities as a whole and knows not only which are the most recent acquisitions to the library (SK likes to expand the selection with publications on fashion) but also what flavor macarons the café is offering this week.

Elisabeth Millqvist

Elisabeth Millqvist is a curator at Magasin 3. She is most fascinated by Sol LeWitt’s thousands of lines and scribble (see current wall drawings exhibition). Besides art itself EM is interested in exhibition texts on art. For inhouse publications she is especially proud of having invited the British cultural historian Marina Warner to write on the fascinating phenomenon of ectoplasm, Spiritus 2003 and horror author John Ajvide Lindqvist to write on what he saw in Annika von Hausswolff’s images (monsters of course). In 2009 EM produced an exhibition where a spotlight was pointed towards Magasin 3’s neighbor, the Banana Company. This was a work by Santiago Sierra who wanted to remind us were the banana comes from. With the recent release of the documentary film ”Bananas” Fredrik Gertten made sure that we do not forget this.

David Neuman

David Neuman is the founding director of Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall. From its inception in 1987 until 1999 he curated all exhibitions at Magasin 3. In the first year he created amongst others an exhibition with Walter de Maria, legendary for his permanent installations “The Broken Kilometer” and “The Earth Room”, New York. Most recently DN curated an exhibition with the Swedish artist Annika von Hausswolff (2008). During the past decade an expanded curatorial team has been responsible for the exhibition schedule. DN is executive in all decisions regarding acquisitions to the collection. His preference in art is the slightly quieter – Minimalism. DN is a co-founder of the curator program at Stockholm University, where he holds a position as affiliated professor.

Tessa Praun

Tessa Praun is a curator at Magasin 3 who had many visitors’ hearts beating for her exhibition with Christian Boltanski. In the course of the exhibition over 3000 people donated the sound of their heartbeat to the artist’s archive. In the fall of 2009 many where again touched profoundly by her exhibition with Smadar Dreyfus. The audiovisual installation ”Mother’s Day” took the audience to the politically charged Golan Heights. Sport can also be an arena for political events but this was not what dominated the film which TP showed in 2008: ”Zidane – A 21st Century Portrait” by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno. 17 cameras followed Zinedine Zidane during a match and TP wrote of ”momentarily being on the field right next to Zidane” – football fever broke out. Besides curating TP spends much of her time working on the international network FACE of which Magasin 3 is a member.
