Jonathan Meese was born in 1970 in Tokyo, Japan and now lives in Berlin and Hamburg, Germany. His work extends across paintings, drawings, prints sculptures, performances but also surrounds to writing, stage design and directing within the theater and opera field. Major retrospective exhibitions were Revolution, at Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover (2003); Mama Johnny, at Deichtorhallen, Hamburg (2006); Jonathan Meese Sculpture, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (2010); Jonathan Meese. Malermeese – Meesermaler, at Museum der Moderne, Salzburg (2013); Meese’s Odyssee at Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2018); and Dr. Zuhause : K.U.N.S.T. (Erzliebe) at Kunsthalle St. Annen, Lübeck (2019). His work is part of several private and public collections as Sammlung Falckenberg, Hamburg; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Albertina, Vienna; Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Louisiana-Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk; Musées de Strasbourg, Strasbourg; K20, Düsseldorf and several more.
