Lars Nilsson

Stockholm , Sweden
1956

Lars Nilsson was born in Stockholm in 1956, where he also lives and works.

Throughout his career, Lars Nilsson has not shunned away from controversial issues such as the male gaze, sexuality, or the dark side of our emotional lives. In installations, paintings, films and photographs, Nilsson combines references from different time periods and different genres. A painting by the American painter Cy Twombly (1928-2011), James Cameron’s science fiction film Avatar (2009) or a historical text about civil law can spark an idea for a new artwork.

Nilsson was a professor of Visual Arts at Malmö Art Academy, Sweden from 1995 to 2006, Lund University. Lars Nilsson had a large solo exhibition at Magasin III in 2003. Other solo exhibitions include Eskilstuna konstmuseum, Eskilstuna (2015); Statens Museum för Kunst, Copenhagen (2004) Palais de Tokyo Paris (2003). Lars Nilsson’s work has been exhibited at MoMA PS1, New York, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, among others.
