Leonard Forslund

February 16 - May 16, 1990
Curator: David Neuman

The exhibition features a unique project: a work commissioned from the Swedish artist Leonard Forslund, who was born in 1959 in Landskrona, and who studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen from 1982 to 1988. Forslund has been working on the painting Subject and dedication M C M X C, which measures 2.5 x 29.8 metres, for more than a year. This enormous painting has been divided into a number of sections based on the demographic structure of the growth in global population from the first ever census to the population explosion of the future. Its artistic expression testifies to an awareness that meaning arises in the interface between the art and the beholder, and in the relationship with art history and society at large. The painting portrays individual human needs in relation to the dimensions of time and space.
